Construction or Transportation Advisory

Construction Advisory: Campus Drive Update: May 2013

Campus Drive Update: May  2013

As the Campus Drive project progresses, visit Construction News: Building Patriot Pride

Campus Drive
The Campus Drive project continues to progress. A significant phase is construction of a detour on Route 123 (Ox Road), which will allow for the construction of the bridges to begin. As a result, the inside lanes of Route 123 between Mason Pond Drive and University Drive will have intermittent closures between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, for the next month.

There will be lane and parking closures at times along Patriot Circle, Mason Pond Drive, Braddock Road, and Rapidan River Road, and in the West Campus lot. E-mail updates will be sent periodically and visit Parking and Transportation’s Facebook and Twitter pages for updates.

Construction or Transportation Advisory #2

Construction Advisory: July 2012-Spring 2013: Roanoke River Road/Braddock Road Improvements

Roanoke River Road/Braddock Road Improvements

As part of a joint project between George Mason University and the Fairfax County Department of Transportation, road improvements will be made to Roanoke River Road and Braddock Road starting in July 2012 through Spring 2013.

May Update

Work hours on Braddock Road will mostly shift to 10:00 p.m.-5:00 a.m. As the project nears completion, paving on Braddock Road as well as the installation of a new traffic signal at Roanoke River Road and Braddock Road will occur. There still may be some limited lane closures between 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

It is highly recommended to avoid this stretch of Braddock Road. When traveling to Mason:

To ensure the safety of construction workers, other drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists, please drive cautiously on Roanoke River Road and Braddock Road. Visit Building Patriot Pride for updates.

The road improvements include (1) doubling the length of the left turn lane for east-bound Braddock Road into Roanoke River Road onto campus; (2) widening Roanoke River Road on campus to have three lanes outbound, a median, and two lanes into campus with a dedicated left turn lane into Lot K and a dedicated right turn lane onto Po River Lane by the Patriot Center as the road heads toward Lots L and A; and (3) synchronizing the traffic signal at Roanoke River Road and Braddock Road, so left turns out of campus and University Mall can be made simultaneously to improve traffic flow on Braddock Road.

Project Schedule

The road improvements are scheduled to take place between July and Spring 2013.

Alternate Directions

Expect heavy traffic on Braddock Road. Faculty, staff, students, and visitors are strongly urged to find alternative access points to campus, including Mason Pond Drive off Rt. 123, University Drive, and Shenandoah River Lane off Roberts Road and use Alternate directions. Although detours using Nottoway River Lane off Braddock Road will be in place, traffic between Roberts Road and Rt. 123 and to the east and west will still be disrupted. Eastbound traffic on Braddock Road is expected to back up significantly, so avoiding Braddock Road altogether is highly encouraged.

Project Updates

To see a project overview, get current information and updates on this and other upcoming road projects, go to http://building.gmu.edu. For information about parking, transportation, and the effects on traffic caused by construction and events, visit Parking and Transportation on Facebook and Twitter.

The project will be administered by Mason’s Facilities Management in coordination with Fairfax County, the Virginia Department of Transportation, and University Mall, which will undergo a simultaneous renovation that includes work on the westbound left-hand turn lane as you approach the mall entrance on Braddock Road. Mason’s contractor will do the actual work for University Mall on Braddock Road but will be paid through the University Mall project.
